Dawn and Ryan: New York City Engagement
Something about this city gets me every time. I get off the Metro North and exit the humid train platform into Grand Central and it just takes my breath away. Every single time. It could be because I dreamed of skipping college and coming here to audition for musicals. It could be that Sean asked me to marry him on the most perfect Thanksgiving Day in Central Park. It could be the endless number of romance and classic films I’ve watched, where the city is not a backdrop, but a character that is full of energy and life.
Am I getting carried away? I can’t help it. I don’t care. It gets me every time.
When I met Dawn and Ryan, I was thrilled that they wanted a NYC engagement shoot. They’re getting married in Connecticut in the fall, which will be beautiful, but they live in New York, they met in New York, they fell in love in New York….it only made sense that I photograph them together in the city they call home. I catch myself dreaming sometimes of what it would be like to live in NYC, to have so much at my fingertips. Would I still love it? Would I appreciate it and soak it up like a sponge? I can only hope I would.
Dawn and Ryan’s story began at a bar on the East Side of Manhattan. Joshua Tree. A place that you might not notice walking by. It’s fairly standard as NYC bars go, but it’ll always be that special place to them. No longer ordinary or insignificant, it is a character in their story, a necessary element of who they are together.
We started the day at the Brooklyn Bridge, and then hit up Little Italy, the Meatpacking District, the Central Park Bandshell, and the place where it all began, Joshua Tree. Enjoy!
